Boletus pinophilus Pilat & Dermek, Boletaceae
As the name indicates, the King Bolete is the king of wild mushrooms. It is highly prized for its pleasant aroma, meaty texture, and nutty flavor. The German name 'Steinpilz' eludes to its firm flesh and exceptional cooking qualities as this mushroom retains its meaty texture during the cooking process. This mushroom adds an excellent nutty-mushroomy flavor to soups, stews, and sauces. Or it can be grilled as a steak.
King Boletes are rich in Vitamin B complex, D, and E. Wild edible mushrooms have anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-reducing properties. They enhance the immune system and they assist in reducing blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
We wild-harvest our pinewood king boletes from July through August in northern Saskatchewan.
